Whether or not the groundhog sees his/her shadow, we have been able to go outside for recess for most of the winter so far. That is good news.

The new theme in reading focuses on weather, Sunshine and Raindrops. This week we had two big books to share, Chicken Soup With Rice and What Will the Weather be Like Today? We added Qu and the sound of OU. The popcorn word was IS.

In math, we are reading, writing and modeling the numbers, 11-16 using a ten frame. The 100th day of school is coming up. We have been orally counting by ones and tens. Everyday we also have the countdown to 100. Ask about it.

We are continuing with our practice of lowercase letters. This week we were introduced to the "diver letters", p, r, m, n. Ask for a demonstration of what it means to be a diver letter:)

Keep practicing the popcorn words, and filling out the reading pizza's. January is due next week.

Snow and penguins continue to be on kindergarteners' minds. The favorite book this week was 365 Penguins. We added the words, SO and NO to the popcorn list and the sounds of TH and NG. We are getting very good at putting together and reading words.

New vocabulary in math included SYMMETRY, EQUAL PARTS, UNEQUAL PARTS, WHOLE, and HALF. We will be finishing chapter 6. Next week we will continue with numbers. We are in the countdown to 100th day.

The snow has arrived!

Our big book this week was Ten Little Puppies. Ask about the Noodle family in our read aloud. They were noodle heads when it came to counting. GO was the popcorn word and the letter sounds were CH and SH.

Corner and side were the new vocabulary words in math. We spent time making shapes with the geoboards and the geoblocks.

It was time to review some of the handwriting letters this week using the directions from the Magic C Bunny, c, d, a, g. We used play-doh, markers, pencils, and magnet boards.

All students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack from home to eat mid-morning. The following foods may be eaten at snack time: fruits, vegetables, cheese, and fruit juice. Please no junk food. Food should be ready for consumption and not require peeling,washing, slicing, etc. There is only a limited time for snacks. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Help us to keep snack time healthy!

I will add that we do have nut allergies in the class, so please, refrain from nuts or snacks that contain nuts. Thank you.

We have been lucky with the weather this winter and have been able to go outside for recess until today. The temperature has to be at least 20 degrees including wind chill for us to go outside. Students need to have snow boots and snowpants if they are to go up to the playground. Otherwise students will stay on the blacktop.

The second and third weeks in January are benchmarking weeks. We will be reevaluating the students' progress. Progress reports will be given ONLY to the students who are not meeting the kindergarten expectations on Friday, January 27th.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We started off 2012 with a new theme in reading, Let's Count, a new chapter in math, geometry, and new letters in handwriting! Here's what we have been up to.

A Feast For Ten was the big book for the week. AND was the popcorn word. We focused on the oo sound as in moon and the oo sound as in book. Ask about some of the other winter stories we read.

The geometry chapter starts with recognizing cylinders, spheres, cones, rectangular prisms, and pyramids. We compared the shapes, found the plane figures with the shapes and tried to stack and roll the shapes as well. Students need to practice saying the names.

We practiced lowercase u, i, e, l. We wrote sentences and practiced spacing.

Milk money for the second part of the year is due Friday, January 13th.

Scholastic Book Orders are due Thursday, January 12th.
